How to play Mines, step by step

You'll learn how a round of Mines runs from start to finish, what each button does in Spribe's version, and what happens if you walk away or lose your connection mid-round.

Grid
5 × 5, 25 tiles
Mines (Spribe)
1 to 20, default 3
Demo stakes
$0.10 to $100
Demo win cap
$10,000 per bet

A round in five steps

  1. Set the mines. Spribe's Mines has a dropdown from 1 to 20 mines, starting at 3. Its rules put it simply: "This affects game odds and bet multiplier."
  2. Set the stake. In Spribe's demo the range is $0.10 to $100; a casino sets its own limits.
  3. Open a tile. Tap any tile, or press Random and the game picks one. Each tile hides a star or a mine.
  4. Watch the multiplier. Every star raises it. The Next figure shows what the next star would pay: with 3 mines it reads 1.10× before your first pick and 1.25× after it.
  5. Cash out or carry on. Cash out pays stake × current multiplier and ends the round. Opening a mine ends it too, and the stake is lost.

Auto Game and its stop rules

Auto Game starts from its own button, and then you select the tiles it should open each round. You can tell it to stop if your balance drops by a set amount, if a single win passes a set amount, or if your balance rises by a set amount. Spribe adds a warning worth reading: "this feature might be unavailable in some casinos."

When you walk away

Spribe's game doesn't leave a round hanging. If you stop clicking, it cashes out by itself after 30 seconds, with a countdown on screen for the last 10. If your connection drops while a bet is live, the rules say "the game will auto cash out with the current multiplier, and the winning amount will be added to your balance." If the game itself malfunctions, affected bets are void and refunded.

Limits: the number that actually caps a win

Spribe lists the game's maximum odds as 5,044,291×, but the rules add that the maximum win is limited by the operator. In Spribe's own demo a single bet can win at most $10,000. A casino's limit is in the game's Game Limits menu, and it's worth reading before you chase a long run.

Before you play for money

Try a few dozen rounds on the free grid first, and decide your mine count and cash-out point in advance. Online casinos are not licensed in Australia; what to check before using one is on Mines for real money.

Questions people ask

Can I cash out after one tile?
Yes. Spribe's rules say you can cash out after each successful guess, so one safe tile is enough.
What happens if I close the game mid-round?
In Spribe's Mines an idle round cashes out by itself after 30 seconds, with a countdown on screen for the last 10. If your connection drops, the game cashes out at the current multiplier and adds the win to your balance.
Does the Random button change the odds?
No. A tile picked at random is exactly as likely to be safe as one you choose.
What does Auto Game do?
It repeats rounds on the tiles you select, with stop rules for losses and wins. Spribe notes the feature might be unavailable in some casinos.
